Case Discussion

The serpent sign, is a sign described in hydatid disease.

During the active stage, the cyst consists of three layers: the exterior (pericyst), middle (ectocyst), and interior (endocyst). When the pressure within the cyst rises, the ectocyst may burst, requiring dissection from the pericyst. This collapsed ectocyst, within an intact pericyst, may be seen on ultrasonography, CT, and MRI and appears like a snake or serpent.
