Ultrasound shows a left common carotid artery with diffuse, homogeneous, hyperechoic wall thickening with increased peak systolic velocity.
Internal and external carotid arteries show preserved caliber with systolic peaks within normal values.
Case Discussion
The transverse image above shows the Macaroni sign, which is a homogenous, hyperechoic thickening of the common carotid artery wall. On ultrasonography, it is typically found in Takayasu arteritis.
