Although brain edema was once thought to represent brain invasion this is now known not to be the case. Compression with venous hypertension, rapid growth and local vasoactive factors are thought to play a part. 

At craniotomy, the mass was separate from the brain, with an intact pial layer. 

Histology confirmed a meningioma.
