External application of the metallic AtriClip® device onto the base of the left atrial appendage (LAA) mechanically isolates the LAA from the left atrium. The closing force also leads to ischemic injury and electrical isolation of the LAA, which subsequently atrophies and is resorbed.

Deployment of the AtriClip® device is intended to reduce the risk of embolization of thrombus from the LAA into the systemic circulation in patients with atrial fibrillation.
