Airspace

Last revised by Rohit Sharma on 13 Mar 2024

Airspace is defined by the Fleischner 2024 glossary as the gas-containing part of the lung parenchyma.

Summary

The term airspace refers to respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli.

Terminal bronchioles and other airways that are only conductive are excluded.

Related pathology

Airspace opacities or nodules occur when airspaces are filled with fluid, inflammatory exudate or other material instead of gas 1.
