Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma

Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumour of the oesophagus of smooth muscle origin. 


The first case of oesophageal leiomyosarcoma was described in 1905.  Since then, there have been over 164 cases described in the literature.

Radiographic features

Fluoroscopy - Barium swallow

May show a: 

  • large intramural mass
  • may have exophytic component, resulting in mass effect of trachea or other adjacent thoracic structures

To be added 

  • isointense compared to skeletal muscle on T1-weighted sequences 1
  • hyperintense compared to skeletal muscle on T2-weighted sequences
