Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma

Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumour of the esophagus of smooth muscle origin. 

Epidemiology

The first case of oesophageal leiomyosarcoma was described in 1905.  Since then, there have been over 164 cases described in the literature.

Radiographic features

Fluoroscopy - Barium swallow

May show a 

  • large intramural mass
  • may have exophytic component, resulting in mass effect of trachea or other adjacent thoracic structures
CT

To be added 

MRI
  • iso intense compared to skeletal muscle on T1-weighted sequences1
  • hyperintense compared to skeletal muscle on T2-weighted sequences
