Presentation
Pain in foot.
Patient Data
A well-defined, slightly expansile, lytic lesion with a narrow zone of transition and amorphous calcification is seen in proximal phalanx of 2nd toe. Note the subtle cortical irregularity along the medial and lateral aspect of the lesion suggestive of a pathological fracture.
Case Discussion
Enchondromas are a common benign medullary cartilaginous neoplasm. They are usually asymptomatic but may be complicated by a pathological fracture or malignant transformation into a low-grade chondrosarcoma. It is important to note that if an enchondroma is painful in the absence of a fracture, it should be considered malignant.
