The gastroesophageal junction and the fundus of the stomach are herniated above the diaphragm. The esophageal hiatus is grossly widened.

Case Discussion

In a mixed or compound hiatal hernia, both the gastric fundus and gastroesophageal junction are herniated into the thoracic cavity. This type of hernia carries an increased risk of complications such as volvulus, obstruction, or ischemia.
