Presentation
Incidental finding.
Patient Data
Double infrarenal IVC. Each renal vein drain at the ipsilateral IVC. the right infrarenal IVC courses to joint the left IVC just above this level opposite LV1/2 disc space.
The suprarenal left IVC continues at the left side of the chest left posterolateral to the descending thoracic aorta, coursing above the left pulmonary artery, joining the left innominate vein to drain at the left atrium forming left SVC. The right SVC is formed by the right innominate vein only. (Azygos continuation with double SVC)
There is absent hepatic segment of IVC. The hepatic veins join to drain at the right atrium.
Left IVC with azygos continuation (suprarenal).
Double IVC (infrarenal).
Case Discussion
This case demonstrates left-sided IVC with azygos continuation and double infrarenal IVC. A left-sided SVC is seen in 0.3-0.5% of the normal population. The vast majority of cases are accompanied by a normal right-sided SVC, termed SVC duplication as demonstrated in this case.
