Case Discussion
This neurostimulator device (trade name: Geko) stimulates the common peroneal nerve, which causes muscular contractions in the lower leg and foot. The muscular action drives the venous muscle pump of the lower leg, facilitating the emptying of veins and increasing blood return to the heart.
The device can be used in patients in whom other forms of pharmacological and mechanical thromboprophylaxis are contraindicated.
Case was uploaded with the assistance of Dr Paul McCoubrie.
