Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

History of stroke following thalamic hemorrhage. Presenting with knee pain.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

A common peroneal nerve stimulator device is seen on both the frontal and lateral views (device name: Geko). It is malpositioned anteriorly and should be overlying the common peroneal nerve as it wraps around the fibular head. No other abnormalities.

Case Discussion

This neurostimulator device (trade name: Geko) stimulates the common peroneal nerve, which causes muscular contractions in the lower leg and foot. The muscular action drives the venous muscle pump of the lower leg, facilitating the emptying of veins and increasing blood return to the heart.

The device can be used in patients in whom other forms of pharmacological and mechanical thromboprophylaxis are contraindicated.
