Nipple markers

Case contributed by Ian Bickle
Diagnosis not applicable

Presentation

Known COPD patient attends with shortness of breath. Patient still smoking.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Female
x-ray

Bilateral radio-opacities inside the placed nipple markers.

Confirms normal nipple shadow, not intra-pulmonary pathology.

Case Discussion

A small radio-opacity, especially if unilateral projected over the lower thorax, may be a normal nipple outline or a intra-pulmonary lesion.

A repeat film with skin surface nipple markers applied, helps confirm, which is it and if further investigation is needed.

Simple, but effective.
