A PACS search revealed the previous X-rays confirming sclerotic skeletal metastases.

The linear prostatic brachytherapy seeds in situ account for the comet tail artifact appreciated on ultrasound.

Case Discussion

An example of the comet tail artifact occurring on ultrasound due to the presence of foreign bodies. In this instance, the thin, linear, metallic, brachytherapy seeds account for the artifact as demonstrated above when interrogating the prostate.

The comet tail artifact may occasionally occur when foreign bodies are encountered during sonographic assessment. These include surgical clips and staples, indwelling drainage catheter tips and tubes, and any embedded foreign bodies including but not limited to glass and metal.
