A simplified illustration of the subclavian artery, its three parts in relation to the anterior scalene muscle, and its five primary branches comprising of:
- vertebral artery
- internal thoracic artery
- thyrocervical artery
- costocervical trunk
- dorsal scapular artery
Note that the dorsal scapular artery may arise from the second part of the subclavian artery or the transverse cervical artery (a branch of the thyrocervical trunk) in one-third of the population 1.
