Active surveillance is a management option that aims to closely monitor a specific stage of disease and minimize adverse treatment-related effects without compromising survival. Curative or definite treatment is intended and offered upon deterioration or explicit patient request.
There are clear indications for active surveillance, which is usually implemented in diseases with slow progression or low-risk patients not requiring immediate treatment. Early curative treatment is associated with a lower quality of life and similar outcomes compared to no treatment ref.
