MD and DMRD

Doctor of Medicine (MD) which is a 3 years duration degree course and Diploma in Medical Radiodiagnosis (DMRD)- 2 years duration diploma course are among the radiology training courses in India that can be opted through one of the various entrance examinations after graduation:

  • central examination: NEET PG (conducted by National Board of Examinations)

    • NEET: National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduation

  • examinations by autonomous bodies

    • AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences)

    • JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research)

    • PGI (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research)

  • Previously state governments and certain private colleges as deemed universities used to conduct separate entrance tests. There is only a single national-level entrance test - NEET PG.

After clearing one of the examinations and opting for the desired seat, the candidate may pursue the desired course (based on the availability of the type of course).

Under the competency based postgraduate training programme, postgraduate students will be trained to have various necessary skills in cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains and are tested throughout the course.

Assessment

MD

Formative assessment

It includes internal assessment, journal based and self-directed learning, skill-based learning and CMEs.

Summative assessment

Summative assessment is conducted at the end of the training period and includes:

  • thesis

  • theory examination

  • practical/ clinical examination and viva voce

A postgraduate student is only allowed to appear for the theory and practical examination after acceptance of their thesis. The theory examination consists of 4 papers, each containing at least 10 short answer type questions. The practical examination includes ultrasound procedure, film quiz, cases and viva voce.

DMRD

Formative assessment

Formative assessment is similar to MD radiodiagnosis with regular internal assessment tests, self-directed learning, skill-based learning and CMEs.

Summative assessment

The summative assessment at the end of the training period includes:

  • theory examination

  • practical/clinical and oral examination

No thesis is required during this two-year course. The theory examination consists of 3 papers, with each paper containing at least 10 short answer type questions. The practical examination includes cases, film quiz and viva voce. Ultrasound procedure demonstration is optional.

MD Radiodiagnosis qualified candidates are eligible for subspeciality courses like various fellowships, DM Neuroradiology, cardiovascular radiology, vascular radiology and Interventional radiology and DNB in endovascular and interventional radiology
