Spontaneous rupture of membranes

A spontaneous rupture of membranes (SROM) refers to a rupture of fetal membranes occuring on its own (c.f artificial rupture of membranes). When this occurs prior to ~ 37 weeks in gestation, it is then termed spontaneous premature rupture of membranes (SPROM) which it the usual cause of pre-term premature rupture of membranes (PPROM).
