True hermaphroditism is a form of disorder of gender development.
Pathology
Patients with true hermaphroditism have mosaicism of 46XX and 46XY. They therefore have both ovarian and testicular tissues.
Subtypes
There are three forms of true hermaphroditism:
-
unilateral true hermaphroditism
- a testis and ovary on one side
- plus, a testis or an ovary on the other side
-
bilateral true hermaphroditism
- both a testis and ovary on each side
-
lateral true hermaphroditism
- a single testis on one side and an ovary on the other side
