Intussusception

Presentation

Abdominal pain for one week.

Patient Data

Age: 30 months
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Soft tissue mass is seen anterior to the right kidney. In the longitudinal view, it gives rise to a reniform shape (pseudokidney sign). In the transverse view, it shows multilayered concentric rings of mass (target sign). Doppler flow indicates bowel wall viability.

Findings are characteristic ultrasound findings of ileocolic intussusception.

Case Discussion

The child developed symptoms of abdominal pain and vomiting for one week, hydrostatic enema by pediatric surgeon was attempted but the reduction was not successful.

Factors that made the reduction less likely in this case were:

  • long history
  • older than 2 years age
