Obturator hernia causing small bowel obstruction

Presentation

Abdominal pain and vomiting.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

Small bowel obstruction characterized by dilated loops and multiple air-fluid levels. Gastric distension also noted. There is a right obturator hernia containing a small loop of small bowel, which is the transition point. 

Case Discussion

The patient proceeded to laparotomy by which time the hernia had spontaneously reduced. A small jejunal tear was repaired as was a 1 cm defect in right obturator foramen.
