Apple-core appearance of the colon

Case contributed by Dr Mohammad Taghi Niknejad

Case Discussion

Annular constricting types of colon on barium studies usually are the shortest filling defects among colon tumors. Initially they invade unilaterally the lumen to become annular around it later on and produce typical apple core appearance.

Dilatation of the proximal segment occurs with time passing and one side of the apple core shape is effaced. Acute marginal angles or shouldering sign may disappear proximally because of its dilatation.
