Caecal volvulus

Case contributed by Dr Mark Holland

Abdominal pain and distension

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Female

Large dilated loop of bowel centrally within the abdomen. The stomach is in normal position and there is no dilatation of the large bowel in general. Appearance therefore favors caecal volvulus.

There is massive distension of the caecum which reaches up to 14.5 cm in diameter. The caecal pole is rotated supero-anteriorly with a twisting motion nicely demonstrated in the right flank.
