Calcaneal lipoma

Case contributed by Dr Paresh K Desai

Presentation

Ankle Trauma (Football Injury)

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male
Modality: MRI

The calcaneal lesion is hyperintense on both T1 and T2 weighted images. There is central hypointensity on T1 within the lesion. STIR images reveal patchy peripheral fat suppression.

Calcaneal lipomas may show the above imaging findings due to presence of central fluid areas with peripheral fibrofatty regions.

Case Discussion

the central T1 hypointensity may be due to fluid component.

Central haemorrhage may also give rise to differential signal intensity characterstics like in this case.
