Transient arm weakness. ? TIA

Patient Data

Age: 95 years
Gender: Female
  • large persistent hypoglossal artery arising from the distal right cervical ICA at the level of C2/3
  • the vessel passes through an enlarged hypoglossal canal to join the basilar artery
  • absent right vertebral artery and diminutive left vertebral artery noted
  • no aneurysms or large vessel occlusion
  • bovine aortic arch also noted

This case illustrates two vascular anatomical variants of both the aortic arch (bovine arch) and of the persistent carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomoses (persistent hypoglossal artery)
