Round atelectasis

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Patient in late follow-up for colonic cancer, asymptomatic.

Patient Data

Age: 68
Gender: Male

Ct Chest (scout)

Ct scout shows no significant changes except for parenchymal streaks and doubtful diaphragmatic contraction on the left lung base.

CT Chest

Nodular image on basal lung segments of the left lower lobe. It`s circumscribed, regular,  adjacent to a pleural surface, retracting the bronchial segments for lower lobe, as well as reducing the volume of the respective lobe.

Case Discussion

Round atelectasis is an unusual type of atelectasis where there is infolding of a redundant pleura. The way the lung collapses can at times give a false mass like appearance.
