Near drowning pulmonary edema and thermal wrap

Presentation

Near drowning in a saltwater pool. The patient is hypothermic on admission.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Male

The trachea is central with a satisfactorily sited endotracheal tube( ETT). There is a satisfactorily sited nasogastric tube (NGT), with overlying ECG leads. The cardiomediastinal contour is normal.

There is ill-defined ground glass attenuation and air space opacities with some peripheral sparing. There are no pleural effusions.

There is an overlying thermal wrap.

Case Discussion

An example of non cardiogenic pulmonary edema due to cold saltwater near drowning.

The overlying, regular patterned artifact is due to the thermal wrap utilized to retain heat and improve the body temperature.
