Duodenal atresia

Case contributed by Alexandra Stanislavsky
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Newborn post emergency C-section at 31 weeks. Born in poor condition with apnoeas.

Patient Data

Age: Neonate
Gender: Male
x-ray

Marked gaseous distension of the stomach and proximal duodenum, with absent bowel gas distally.

Case Discussion

Typical "double bubble" appearance of duodenal atresia.

The baby had an unremarkable antenatal course, and the diagnosis was not expected at birth.

This case highlights the importance of vigilant antenatal morphology review, as a pre-natal diagnosis would have assisted with immediate postnatal care.  Baby recovered well following repair of duodenal atresia.
