Classification

Hypothermia is classified by the Swiss system into four stages. The system was designed for use in the field, when accurate measurements of core temperature are not possible, and designates clinical signs as surrogate measures of the body temperature 1

Occasionally, a fifth stage (V) is used for hypothermia-induced death.
