Mobile caecum syndrome

Last revised by Kieran Kusel on 31 Aug 2021

Mobile caecum syndrome refers to a symptomatic mobile caecum, manifesting as chronic intermittent right lower quadrant pain and distension.

Epidemiology

It is estimated that a mobile caecum occurs in 10-20% of the population, however, it is usually asymptomatic and thus mobile caecum syndrome is an uncommon diagnosis.

Pathology

Owing to a redundant mesocolon, the caecum is free to twist on itself, thus resulting in an intermittent caecal torsion. There are reported cases of caecal volvulusbascule and intussusception.

Treatment and prognosis

Treated by laparoscopic caecopexy or cecocolopexy. Concomitant appendicectomy is advised.
