Body was changed:

This classification system has been developed by the Spine Trauma Group1 to overcome some of the perceived difficulties regarding the use of other classifications systems for determining treatment.

Classification score is based on 3 major categories: injury morphology; posterior ligamentous complex integrity; and patient neurology.  Points are assigned to parameters in each of the major categories.

Parameter                                                                        Points
  Morphology

Compression fracture                                                           1   Burst fracture                                                                        2   Translational rotational injury                                             3   Distraction injury                                                                  4

Posterior ligamentous complex

Intact                                                                                       0   Suspected injury or indeterminate                                       2   Injured                                                                                    3

Neurologic involvement

   Intact                                                                                      0   Nerve root                                                                              2   Cord/conus medullaris - incomplete                                   3   Cord/conus medullaris - complete                                      2   Cauda equina                                                                        3

Management:

Total number of points helps guide managing surgeons and physicians determine a management plan depending on the presence of other co-morbidities and injuries.

Patients with a score of 0-3 will usually be treated non operatively. Those with a score of 5 or more are usually considered surgical candidates. Those with a scope of 4 may be treated operatively or non operatively.
