Uterine prolapse

Last revised by Mostafa Elfeky on 5 Jan 2024

Uterine prolapse is a form of pelvic organ prolapse and can fall under a broader umbrella term of pelvic floor dysfunction. It may occur in isolation or in combination with other organs (i.e rectal prolapse +/- urinary bladder prolapse).

Typically occurs in multiparous older females.

It results from herniation of the uterus into the vaginal canal due to the weakening of its support structures. The anterior and/or posterior vaginal wall may also be involved.

Features include

  • H and M lines are elongated.

  • vagina loses its normal vertical-oblique orientation and can be directed in a more horizontal axis

  • if accompanied by a bladder prolapse, a cystocele may be present.

  • may show herniations of associated structures such as fibroids.
