Left hip pain after a fall.

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Complete, displaced left subcapital femoral neck fracture with varus angulation.

Confirms complete, displaced left subcapital femoral neck fracture. Focal areas of lucency left femoral head of uncertain etiology.

x-ray

Left total hip arthroplasty appropriately position without complication.

The Garden classification system, based on the appearance of the fracture on an AP radiograph, is used to grade subcapital femoral neck fractures.

Case Discussion

The Garden classification system is used to guide treatment of subcapital femoral neck fractures. Displaced fractures are often treated with hip arthroplasty, as in this case. Non-displaced fractures are often treated with cannulated screws.
