Case contributed by Shailaja Muniraj
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Lower thigh pain.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

At least four accessory well defined bony ossicles noted at the margins of the patella.

No other abnormality.

Case Discussion

Multipartitie patella is a segmentation anomaly and is usually an uncommon incidental finding.

Fractures must be ruled out. Usually there would be preceding trauma and on imaging the fragments would be ill defined and not confined to the poles or upper outer quadrant.

Symptomatic patients present with anterior knee pain. In such patients MRI would be useful in demonstrating marrow edema in the accessory fragments and synchondrosis.
