Presentation
Backache radiating to the left side. The patient was referred for an MRI of the lumbar spine.
Patient Data
The MRI of the lumbar spine shows degenerative changes. However, on axial images a relatively large calculus is seen in left renal pelvis causing dilatation of pelvicalyceal system. The visualized left upper ureter appears thickened as well.
Case Discussion
We see renal calculi very commonly on CT and ultrasound. However, these are not very commonly seen on MRIs.
The above case highlights the value of an approach based thorough examination of all structures/organs in a given study. The left renal calculus is likely to be the cause of the patient's symptoms.
