Presentation
Full-term newborn. Birth asphyxia. Hypotonia and low Apgar score.
Patient Data
Bilateral hyperintense signal of the perirolandic cortex and basal ganglia on both T1 and T2 weighted imaging. Subcortical white matter appears hypointense on T1 and hyperintense on T2.
Case Discussion
MRI features of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), which is the most common etiology for neonatal encephalopathy. HIE has many distribution patterns. The pattern seen in this case, associating injuries of the perirolandic cortex and the deep grey matter, is mostly seen in full term newborn babies who suffered acute profound birth asphyxia.
