Presentation
Sudden onset of headache with vomiting in a patient known for sickle cell disease. No history of trauma.
Patient Data
Well-demarcated biconvex heterogeneously hyperdense frontal collection (maximum thickness = 35 mm on the right and 15 mm on the left, crossing the metopic suture which limits the right and left frontal components of the epidural hematoma. A mass effect is noted on the frontal lobes and horns mainly on the right. No underlying frontal fracture seen on the bone window or 3D-VR.
Case Discussion
CT features of a spontaneous epidural hematoma in a patient known for sickle cell disease that was confirmed at surgery.
Spontaneous epidural hematoma is considered a rare complication of sickle cell disease, only a few cases were reported in the literature 1,2. The exact aetiopathogenesis is still not clearly understood 1,2.
