Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Inversion injury while playing football.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male

There is irregularity of the lateral margin of the base of the 5th metatarsal with an associated oblique fracture.

Case Discussion

In pediatric patients, injury to the lateral margin of the foot is complicated by the apophysis at the base of the 5th metatarsal. The apophysis is oriented longitudinally along the axis of the bone while fractures are predominantly transverse lucencies across the base of the metatarsal.
