Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Work up for hands degenerative joint disease.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

There is bilateral brachymetacarpia of the fifth ray without phalangeal hypoplasia.

Mild degenerative changes are seen in PIP and DIP joints of both hands as subchondral sclerosis and small marginal osteophytes formation.

Case Discussion

Brachymetacarpia is due to the early closure of the growth plate of the metacarpal and often affects the fourth finger. It can be a congenital condition or acquired deformity following trauma, infection, tumor, radiation, or prior surgery.

It should reminded that isolated shortening of the 5th metacarpals has been described in a familial variant of type 1 diabetes mellitus.
