C2 and C3 fractures (infant)

Presentation

Infant with a seizure. Skeletal survey revealed acute and healing fractures.

Patient Data

Age: 3 months
Gender: Female

Lucencies are seen through the pedicles of C2 bilaterally. Alignment is normal. Disc heights are normal. There is no canal stenosis.

Burst fracture of C3 with retropulsion of the posterior vertebral body wall into the spinal canal. There is severe spinal stenosis and T2 hyperintesity of the cord at this level. Increased T2 hyperintensity of the posterior ligamentous complex.

Case Discussion

This infant had a skull fracture as well as rib and clavicle fractures, child abuse was suspected. Cervical fractures are rare in infants.
