Colonic diverticula - widespread

Case contributed by Dr Jeremy Jones

Recurrent bleeding per rectum.

Patient Data

Age: Elderly
Gender: Female

Barium enema

Double contrast barium enema demonstrates very widespread diverticula, most numerous in the sigmoid colon. There are no regions of stenosis and no evidence of fistula formation.

Case Discussion

Colonic diverticulosis is very common, and is frequently encountered incidentally on examinations. It is important to distinguish diverticulosis from diverticulitis (inflammation) and to not necessarily attribute abdominal symptoms to diverticula, as most are asymptomatic.
