Disc extrusion

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Right sided sciatica

Patient Data

Age: 35 years

MRI spine

L5/S1: A large right paracentral/subarticular disc extrusion with the extruded disc passing inferiorly compresses the descending right S1 nerve within the lateral recess and partially effaces the right anterolateral aspect of the adjacent terminal thecal sac.

No high grade compression upon the terminal aspect of the cauda equina.

Case Discussion

A healthy spine with an isolated symptomatic disc extrusion is usually a simple diagnosis to make.

The patient went on to have the disc resected and made an uneventful recovery.
