This case demonstrates an intertrochanteric fracture with displacement. Fractures are broadly divided into intra and extra-capsular fractures and in more detail with the Garden classification. This determines the surgical treatment; intracapsular typically get a hemiarthroplasty and extracapsular a dynamic hip screw.  

A neck of femur fracture (NOF) is a relatively common injury sustained by older patients who are more likely to have both unsteadiness both unsteadiness of gait, and reduced bone mineral density, predisposing to fracture.
