Presentation

Intermittent paresthesia.

Patient Data

Prominent lateral tentorial sinuses noted incidentally, best appreciated on the SWI.

The white matter is unremarkable with no features to suggest current or previous demyelination. The remainder of the brain is also within normal limits, with no intra- or extra-axial collection, mass or region of abnormal contrast enhancement.

Case Discussion

The lateral tentorial sinuses are normal structures formed by the convergence of the draining veins along the basal and lateral surface of the temporal and occipital lobes. These sinuses typically drain into the anterior two-thirds of the transverse sinus and the transverse-sigmoid junction.

Delineation of the drainage patterns of the lateral tentorial sinuses may be critical in lateral skull base surgery to avoid venous infarction.
