Follow-up of a patient with Perthes disease. The radiograph reveals bilateral coxa plana (i.e. flattening and widening of the femoral heads). There is sclerosis of the left femoral epiphysis.
Case Discussion
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, or just Perthes disease, is characterized by idiopathic osteonecrosis of the proximal femoral epiphysis. It is an exclusion diagnosis and other causes of osteonecrosis should be discarded.
The disease is usually unilateral, but in the present case, there is bilateral Perthes disease.
