Neurofibromatosis type 1

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Presentation

Gradual onset of weakness in arms and legs. Long medical history.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
MRI

MRI cervical spine

Selected images from an MRI of the cervical spine demonstrate innumerable nodules located on the skin, in the soft tissues and along nerve roots. These are intermediate signal on T1 with moderate contrast enhancement, and are high signal on T2. They are most pronounced at C2 where they cause marked cord compression.

Case Discussion

This case illustrates how extensive neurofibromas in NF1 can be, as well as how much the cord can be compressed if compression occurs slowly.
