Omental cake

Case contributed by Dr Taryn Roya Kalami

Presented with a 1 month history of progressive abdominal distension. Referred to the radiology department for an abdominal ultrasound.

Patient Data

Age: 76
Gender: Female

Ultrasound confirms abdominal ascites with an omental cake. Biopsies for a histological diagnosis were taken at the time of the ultrasound assessment.

Case Discussion

Ultrasound is a useful tool in diagnosing diffuse peritoneal malignancy. Omental caking is commonly described on CT but subtle changes on ultrasound may be overlooked.
