Pediatric round pneumonia (mimicking shoulder pain)

Presentation

Fever, cough,? Tenderness over right scapula and pain lifting the right arm at the shoulder r/o bony injury

Patient Data

Age: 7 years
Gender: Female

Normal acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joint.

Focal consolidation in the right upper lobe.

Focal consolidation peripherally in the right upper lobe, consistent with a round pneumonia.

Heart size normal. Left lung clear.

Case Discussion

A good example of round pneumonia - these typically occur in the pediatric population.

This case was interesting as the child presented with referred shoulder pain from the right upper lobe pneumonia abutting the pleural surface.
