Presentation

Knee pain.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

A small linear calcification adjacent to the medial femoral condyle paralleling the femoral cortex suggests a Pellegrini-Stieda lesion.

In addition, subtle degenerative changes are seen in both tibiofemoral and patellofemoral articular surfaces, including sharpening of tibial spurs and small osteophyte formation.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates a Pellegrini-Stieda lesion, which refers to ossified post-traumatic lesions at (or near) the medial femoral collateral ligament next to the margin of the medial femoral condyle. Mild and moderate cases are typically managed conservatively with steroid injections and range-of-motion exercises. Surgical removal of calcifications and repair of the medial collateral ligament is primarily considered for stubborn cases.
