Pyelitis and ureteral stent encrustation

Axial portal venous phase CT images (soft tissue window) demonstrate a large obstructing calculus within the right urinary pelvis causing mild hydronephrosis. Urothelial thickening and enhancement and marked surrounding inflammatory stranding suggest urinary tract infection (pyelitis).
Axial portal venous phase CT images (bone window) demonstrate a fractured and abandoned ureteral stent coiled within the renal pelvis with surrounding calcification / encrustation leading to urinary tract obstruction.
Case Discussion
Long-standing ureteral stents frequently undergo encrustation and put patients at increased risk for urinary tract infection.
