Ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Low-grade fever, cough, and left chest pain for a few months.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

An irregular, thick-walled air-containing cavity is noted apico-posterior segment of the left upper lobe. The lesion shows irregularly shaped, hyperdense material in the dependent part, suggestive of a detached endomembrane. The lesion is surrounded by patchy areas of consolidation.

Multiple small mediastinal lymph nodes are also observed.

Case Discussion

CT features are suggestive of a ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst along with an infective/inflammatory process.
